Our Dave

If ONLY the virtues of the ‘60’s still existed. Out local Country Party member was Sir David Nicholson. He was our loved and respected Member of Parliament from 1950 to 1972, when the seat he represented ran from Albany Creek to Caboolture.

Debonair, dapper and overall, an appealing and voter winning personality, he became Speaker of the House, and served for the longest term, since 1860.

On polling day at Albany Creek State School back in the ‘60’s. Wes Hart (Country Party) and Herb Alton (Labour), always met you at the front of the school but if Wes was at the wc, home for lunch or just plain late, Herb would hand out his ‘How to Vote’ cards, AND vice versa, Wes would do the same for Herb. I doubt if the Howard/Rudd supporters would be as charitable.

The story was the name at Narangba with Terry Gibbs for the ALP, meeting Dave for the first time at a booth and becoming lifetime friends despite political differences.
His friendship crossed political boundaries. His living monument is the Bribe Bridge (he campaigned against his own County party) to have the bridge built (remember the old barge?).
The Redcliffe Hospital was his dream come true. He introduced Questions without notice to the house. His boxing ability gave him a distinct Jeckyl and Hyde aura. How could such a gentleman be a pugilist? A politician who proved himself to be a good bloke and used his position as a Speaker of the house without fear of favour.

In his younger days, he was always part of the boxing troupe at the local show and was in demand to call the ring events and broadcast announcements at the Country Shows.
In 1933 he became the first Australian to ride the infamous “Wall of Death” at the Ekka. From 1925, to 1928 he was a professional motorbike rider.

If you are new to the district and have not yet enrolled, then, no matter who hands you a ‘How to Vote’ card on polling day, your vote is wasted because you won’t be on the roll. What a shame.

Many have fought hard to win our democracy – I urge you to exercise to the full , that democratic right to vote.

Cards available at the local police station and my real estate office.

A real fair dinkum question time, to keep ministers on their toes. Not prearranged questions to score political points to denigrate and personally character smear, those in the opposite spectrum of politics.
