The location of the Albany Markets Shopping Centre at 720 Albany Creek Road (Anz Bank, Diggers Pies, Cheesecake Shop etc) in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s was the “centre of the universe” each November 5th.

Every man, woman and child, gathered in the front paddock of Keith and Freda Wruck’s property to raise funds for the Albany Creek State School to commemorate “The Gunpowder Plot” or the attempt to blow up the English Houses of Parliament by Guy Fawkes, who knew a lot about fireworks.

The pre-event build up included construction of a massive bonfire (after school each day) with timber, tyres, etc creating a tall beacon, higher than the tavern barn. Students found extra local (paying) jobs so the boys could buy more and more ‘threepenny bungers’ and rockets and the girls could buy sparklers, catherine wheels, tom thumbs, etc.

My cash came from picking beans at Ubank’s Farm (now Tiverton) at sixpence a 5 litre bucket.

What a great community night with high spirits, smoke, fire and bunger fights. (More than 100 attended – 110% local participation) and the usual trestle loaded with home made cakes, tarts and gallons of red cordial to keep the night going for ever.

The present Albany Creek community still get together annually for Christmas in the Creek.
