TAKE A SPIN IN A FORD

Edward Holden, former Adelaide saddler who in 1923 turned to assembly line and body building work at Ford, Geelong, Victoria. At that time a motor vehicle was costing $700 which was 330 times the average weekly earning. In 2004 the motor vehicle now represent 46 times the weekly earning.

The body Building works were taken over in 1931 by the US conglomerate General Motors and it wasn't till 1948 that a vehicle was actually launched into the market, bearing the Holden name (actually a rebadged German OPAL).

In 1947 a house in Brisbane cost 185 times weekly earning (average weekly earnings were $6 per week). Conversely the cost of local average housing has blown out as a percentage of weekly earnings, it is now in the order of 370 times ratio.

Even in 1949, the modest second hand Ford Anglia Tour, cost Max Ham $600, ie 46 times weekly earning and the ratio remains unchanged in 2004 for a $44,000 Holden.

The housing story follows a different pattern

1947 Paddington $1840 - 185 times average wages
1970 Albany Creek (Keong Road) 8600 - 165 times average wages
2006 Albany Creek (Keong Road) 280,000 - 297 times average wages.

As could be expected both cars and houses have greatly improved in standard, finish and home ownership for the under 30s has dropped from 90% in the 60 & 70s to just over 50% now.
