WORK NOTES FOR ALBANY CREEK STATE HIGH SCHOOL CIVIL EDUCATION
ON MONDAY 22ND JUNE 1987
As presented by Peter Campbell
By the year 2000 it is predicted that the average house prices in Brisbane will
be around $170,000. Unbelievable? Lets look at the prices of the average established
house in Brisbane since 1945.
Year Price
1945 $ 1,500
1954 $ 4,223
1965 $ 8,360
1978 $27,750
1984 $65,500
1986 $63,600
2006 $300,000
You will see by this tabulation that there is a strong prospect of houses increasing in price threefold in the next fourteen years and even though housing seems an expensive prospect in 1987, it is in 1987 that you plane to buy your first home.
In considering the hundred students here today aged 15 and think about where they will be in 50 years i.e. aged 65 on the present statistics the following applies:- 38 will be dead, 62 will be alive, of those 62 that are alive 38 will be dead broke, 16 will be working, 7 will be retired on a liveable income, 1 will be wealthy.
If you consider the list that is published periodically in the Courier Mail of Australia’s wealthiest people, you will note that most of them have made their money from Real Estate.
Before you enter the workforce it is important that you determine who you are going to be in the future. Are you going to be one of the 38 who are dead broke or are you going to be one of the 24 who will reach financial independence?
It is fundamental for prosperity within life, to have a strong educational background coupled with budgeting.
We all have different incomes.
Some of us will prepared to survive on the dole. Some of us think that our parents are going to provide the “silver spoon” to support us through our life, other know we must learn very quickly to become good money managers.
A good money manager may be typified as follows – (1) save something of every pay, (2) have a definite goal, (3) work to a individual written plan (4) know that budgeting is a must, (5) seek professional advice in purchase and investments, (6) keen to learn and (7) invest an item that gain value.
What are you goals in life? If you enter the workplace
in 1988 you will be earning between $110 and $127 per week in your first job.
