School Days – Part 6

Albany Creek State School
Memories of Fred Campbell
Student from 1917

When I started school at Albany Creek in 1927 the school building consisted of one room set low on the ground and it had a shingle roof.

There were about 30 pupils, most pf whom walked to school; some rode ponies. At this time there were only two motor vehicles in Albany Creek – both Ford utilities and one belonged to my Farther and the other to Mr Morgan.

The big event of the year was the School Picnic held at the school. Parents were invited, and they were responsible for providing the “goodies”.

Because of the small numbers of pupils, the school was not divided into “Houses”. With only one teacher, the older pupils would often have to teach the younger children.

When I left Albany Creek School, I attended Brisbane State High School, which was the closest High School. I rode my horse to Zillmere and then took the train to the school in George Street, Brisbane.

Note!
Fred Campbell was minister for Industrial Development in the Queensland Government from 1967 to 1977 and Minister for Labour Relations from 1977 until his retirement.
M Campbell was very proud of the school and in 1988 was asked to plant a tree to commemorate the Bicentenary. It still flourishes and in situated between the Admin. Block and “B” Block. Mr Campbell’s brothers, sisters, children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces have all attended Albany Creek School in an unbroken line, with current attendees being great grandchildren of Mr Matt Campbell, Peter and Kimberley Campbell.
