RIVERFIRE
The last thing in the minds of the ½ million revellers
who annually crowd the banks of the Brisbane River and dine on its bridge’s,
to see the f111 dump and burn, is the is the 1893 flood. In fact two floods
in three months.
For those who were part of the clean up in the Brisbane 1974 flood, consider
having to go through it all TWICE. (Our office has a copy of the original 1974
flood map, for your viewing.
Squatter Ernest Baynes 1893 warnings were ignored, despite his desperate hair
raising home ride from the Brisbane Valley to North Pine. Norris Point (the
Brisbane Powerhouse Museum) was washed away forever. The local Cash’s
Crossing bridge near the Greensill / Old Northern Road … was destroyed.
The water covered the full extent of the Alice Street Botanical Gardens and
a certain Government owned Vessel ended up high and dry, in the gardens, after
the water receded.
The financial fortunes of William Collin, the enterprising pioneer of the transport business were enhanced when he won a tender refloat the stricken ship.
Alas, for Government, the ink on the tender document was barely dry, when the second flood of 1893, floated the vessel back to its mooring. William Collin claimed his considerable fee, without any exertion and went on to pioneer the coastal shipping trade.
A daily cargo steamer to Ipswich, the Lady Norman Millaquin sugar contract from Bundaberg; the delivery of molasses to the Strathpine Normanby Rum Distillery, holiday excursions from the new Redcliffe Jetty – the list goes on…
Because he couldn’t get drays to unload his cargo he set up his own land transport business in 1894 to rival the giants of R Jackson and Luya Julius.
And over 110 years ago, it was William Collin to set up the first enterprise bargaining agreements. A remarkable man, prepared to have a go.
A great vantage point for New Years and Riverfire is the Clear
Mountain Health Lodge, take a picnic basket.
