Rollo Sells
Rollo, the Grandson of Tom Petire, sold the final part of the Yerbi Court, Murrumba Homestead, last year, and the foreman’s Cottage has been removed and graceful trees cut to ground level.
The Petrie dynasty explored South East Queensland, purchased broad acres and virtually controlled the design and building of early Brisbane.
Excellent reading, to put fresh insight into your next trip into town, is “The Petrie Family, Building Colonial Brisbane” obtainable from the local library (ISBN 0 – 7022 2346 – 8) By Dimity Doran and ex Seligan Street resident, Denis Cryle.
It was about the same time in 1866, that our foremost local farm was established which, to this say, provides the last remaining cluster of original farm buildings in the shire.
Well, almost. The 1869 homestead was carted off in 2002 to be replaced by a 2003 version steel shed that subsequently burnt to the ground and has been replaced.
The creamery and slab sheds still exist by the swimming pool. But, for how long?
Each day I am reminded of the beauty of Wrights Farm (Wantima Country Golf Club) because of the pen and ink drawings by Gwen Soutter, of the Aspley Art Group.
Sign into Wantima, the friendly club, and have a meal and a couple of pots, overlooking the golF course (Phone 3264 1633 for bookings).
In my earlier days, Wrights Farmhouse was a great place to visit. A regular meeting place for real estate agents from 3pm each Friday for a ‘lemonade’ and a game of pool.
