Kokoda – Part 3

Conclusion on the Death of a Pig

It can thus be seen that the five grounds on which I investigated the untimely death of this Yule pig reached no definite conclusion although yielding much valuable information. I therefore took the inquiry further and ascertained –

1. The pig left Wau.
2. The pig reached Kiesenik.
3. The pig died at Kiesenik.

And further my inquiries showed that the pig was bedded for the night in a hut at the outside of the village. The natives swear that they chased a Bullock away from the hut several times during the night. The bullock of course may have been the notorious Red Steer – each reports it as being distinctly Reddish in colour. Whichever it was this beast’s actions are distinctly suspicious.
Further investigation in that direction should be taken. In the morning the pig was dead. The expression “pig’s arse” frequently led me astray in directions and invariably proved abortive. My conclusion is that taking into account the pigs disappearance was at Chrystal Creek the gender of the animal can be fairly reliably guessed at and although I sympathise, this Yuletide, with the absence of festal pork in your stomachs I think the greatest sympathy should be directed to the cook who appear to have missed a great opportunity to stuff a pig.
