Keona

Keona Meats was one of the largest meat small goods manufacturers in Brisbane until the early 70’s. The Piggery, workers cottages and local shops, was one of Albany Creeks biggest local employers. The two workers houses were on the Albany Hills Schools site (opposite 155 Keong Road).

The Keona delivery trucks were well known from Albany Creek up to the Glasshouse Mountains with Lonie Keong always expanding his market into the dominating Huttons brands, including hams, bacons, and small goods in Albany Creek.

If you live in Wanaka, Bellbird on Keona Road McDowall, you on part of the spelling yards.

The local Huttons factory was adjacent to Aspley High School on Zillmere Road and provided canned and frozen meals plus high quality exports of beef, lamb and pork to many overseas countries. It opened in 1888 and included the Carseldine Campus and Prestige Dorville Road Lands. Numerous local farmers worked at the factory in drought and poor seasons. Huttons was taken over by K.R Darling Downs and moved its operations to the Darling Downs (to clone in 2007).

Matt Campbell is a fourth generation Campbell and lived in the 1980’s on the 170 acres where Turnberry Crescent is now sited. Many of that generation will remember the motorbike rides and carefree bush parties and bonfires. He is conscious of the districts historical past and actually involved in its present and future.
