On February 29th 1888, the election results of the first Pine Divisional Board (Pine Rivers Shire Council) appeared in the Government Gazette.

The gentlemen elected included well known names like Leitch, Bell, Fogg, and Ireland.

Henry Thomas Ireland was elected first Chairman and of his eight children, the best known ancestors are Walter (deceased), owner of the car parts paddock, now Queen Elizabeth Drive, Margaret Simpson (deceased), wife of Tom, Albany Creek School from 1948 to 1961, Harold and Phyllis (opposite Wantima) and Nicky (on the banks of Sandy Creek).

Henry Ireland was instrumental in having this locality name changed from Chinaman’s Creek to Albany Creek, after the “blood-royal of Scotland”, the Duke of Albany.

Chinaman’s Creek was ‘inappropriate because no Chinamen live here’.

And to change your own name, it’s easy and no longer a big deal in the Supreme Court. You can change your name as many times as you wish (as long as your previous name is noted).

Why? Just look at society today! Children’s family names may need upgrading to meet changing relationships of their natural parents. And no reason ever existed except common day convention for a change from maiden name to spouse’s name.

Upon his election as first Chairman, unlike Kevin Rudd under the spotlight of the media day in and day out, the message of his election, was carried by word of mouth.
