In the 1860’s, Westfield at Strathpine was the site of Queensland’s FIRST sugar mill and distillery. Cane was supplied from as far away as Nambour, Ballina and Dayboro and cut by forced labour.
The rum produced was called Normanby Rum and won medals in Paris in 1878.
Production got up to 1800 gallons a day (that’s equivalent to 4000, 2 litre milk bottles EACH DAY) and was operated by Owen Gardner, the forerunner of Kirks Soft Drinks.
In 1968, the site closed. My memory is of a stronger taste, unlike the smooth tastes of Beenleigh and Bundaberg or Bacardi.
If you have an old bottle of Normanby Rum, please deliver to the care and attention and enjoyment of Peter Campbell.
At 1800 gallons a day, Normanby Rum must have been good.
