Yarns of Yesteryear
High Rental Demand

Our district remains popular with an increasing number of renters, many of whom can't financially afford to purchase their own property. Albany Creek and Eatons Hill have traditionally less rentals as a percentage of housing as the other adjoining Brisbane City suburbs. With the accent on lifestyle and green caring environment, rentals have increased in value by above $40 PW ,since October 2004.

The scenario is much changed to the depression of 1931 where the number of Australian families, unable to pay rent were so many that the Courts couldn't handle the volume of evictions for non payment.

The Communist Party organised an unemployed workers movement. A worker with three children that earnt below $3.40 per week had access to food relief parcels for $2.00? per week.

To put that in prospective eggs were 20c a dozen in the shops, 3 cents each, leg of mutton 60c, flour was 2 cents a pound (500g).

In Country Towns, a $1.00 food parcel was permitted at each location, the Baker, Butcher, Storekeeper stamped and handed the card to the Constable to make certain that the recipient moved on for the next issue. During this period a factory advertised for two Labourers and 500 unemployed males pressed around the gate at opening time.

2006 must seem a breeze to those who endured the dark days of the depression followed by the War. Its remarkable that those who endured these dark days have so much that could be said but have little to say.
