Yarns of Yesteryear

Gone...

The Rollo Petrie home, the very last section of the original Murrumba Homestead, has gone in 2006.

The first Mormon Church of Brisbane, with its outstanding timber features going to the bulldozers blade (in the path of the Gabba tunnel), in 2007.

The John Sanders Bray, provisional school at Gympie Road, Lawnton, gone into a sea container for later reassembly perhaps.

In Albany Creek we have only one dwelling of the 1864 era, still standing.
Only a handful of local former homes still standing, include the Days Cottage, Alton Post Office, Leitch, Barker and Campbell houses. The 1880 ‘Forest Church’ at Brendale has been sold. What is its future?

The Campbell Home was a ‘kit’ colonial, built in 1910 as a four-room house, with the Kit being provided by Simpsons sawmills of Chermside. Its 70-year residence Ellen McConachie has moved, to a retirement home and the property sold for redevelopment.

GONE… the Cash original homestead.

GONE … Rollo Petrie Home
GONE … Anzac Memorial Trees
GONE … Mole Shop Landmark Trees

Which will be next to go? We have less than a handful of our pioneer homes left

Can we continue to demolish these buildings and remove our heritage as a ‘County Park Tourist Attraction’? Is this is preservation of our history?
Can’t our Council include in the town plan, measures that will prevent profit overtaking preservation. The simple fact is that our building heritage can only remain with council rates and tax concessions, so as the building remains a viable commercial proposition Broad acre land its self (vacant or otherwise) now assumes heritage significance.

The open space of Wantima, Bunyaville Forest, our park network Keong Road Bushland Reserve all need community protection from development precedents.

Each day I drive along Albany Creek Road with gum trees in the centre of the divided road, I'm reminded the battle of preservation was worth it.
The current proposal to Wantima Shareholders to consider sale of part of the Wright Dairy Farm holding to developments, can become the thin edge of the wedge.
For those who don’t want to enter the debate and just play golf – beware.
But when the golf course is gone, and only the alternative is driving an hour in peak traffic conditions, then perhaps you will become a ‘greenie’.

Going! Going! Going!

Wake Up! Or it will all be gone.
