Aerial Photos

Close your eyes – Follow me in times gone, up Keong Road.

From the Fresh Extremes on the left, to Dawn Street – just bush (hidden, with access adjacent to the Albany Creek, Mahaca poultry farm.

From Dawn Street to around the corner in Old Northern Road, opposite Allamanda Drive – Keong’s piggery enterprise (with three houses) and Morgan’s spelling paddock and farm house (opposite the Jinker Track).

And from the Fresh Extremes, on the right of Keong Road, Alton’s Post Office, two Cuthbert houses and bails (to Crofty Street).

Perrings – two houses (Strathford Avenue). Finnermore’s – access to Albany Forest (off Strathford Avenue).

From just 12 houses in the 50’s to an estimate of 7020 houses today. Visit my office and see the 5 aerial photos that chronicle the development.

By the 70’s, Albany Creek still didn’t have Coles, Woolworths, pools, library, sewer, high school, or retirement villages. But then, the population was less than 20% of the current size.

So the resolution by Pine Council to start a Mobile Library was highly anticipated and eagerly received. The Library Committee let the tender to build the bus, to Superior Body Works with Kevin Melton (retired of Windemere Road) as foreman, in uncharted waters.

The Apex Club took time off from building cricket pitches in our parks and constructed the Mobile Library bays and within months, the library membership was up to 80% of the Albany Creek population.

The driver if the Mobile Library was the partially blind Eddie Topp and I am told by former staff that the trips to Oceanview, Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious were trips that still cause nightmares.

In 1988, Rob Akers (Mayor) accepted the Local Government Award for Excellence for Mobile Mark 2, an aerodynamic body with stunning local murals fitted with on-line computer, photocopier, etc.

Here in Albany Creek, at Greenview Park, we now have a top library – check it out and then amble across to my office and view the aerial photos.
