The area is rich in history and the names of many early settlers-Cash, Leitch, Cuthbert, Campbell, Draper, Ireland, Eaton, Greensill, Mole and Morgan-are remembered in street, park and place names.
Today’s residents are proud of their links with the past recognizing that the courage and foresight o those early settlers and their faith in the future of the area provided the foundation for today’s prosperous community. As an example, it is interesting to note that the Albany Creek State School was founded by these early pioneers in 1875 as Chinaman’s Creek State School. The school has been renovated and enlarged many times to meet the needs of the area but it still occupies the original site next to the Modern shopping centre in the main street, and maintains and unbroken history of over 100 years.
Several older properties are noted by the National Trust and one-Mrs MacKenzies Cottage-now fully restored is a focal point in Hawkins Garden Centre.
Many of the old buildings have disappeared but, fortunately, much of the history has been recorded in ‘The history of Albany Creek, Bridgeman Downs and Eatons Hill’ by D.R. Teague. The book makes interesting reading especially in the transformation from a rural to a high quality residential community without loss of these vital roots.
