INVESTORS AND RENTERS

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australian Housing Survey, 1999 (AHS 1999) the profile of Queensland renters in the private sector is summarized as follows:
  1. Single parent households accounted for 11.9% of private rental households compared with 6.3% of all households.
  2. Group households account for 11.5% of private rental households and only 4.1% of all households.
  3. Couples only represented 19.2% of households in private rentals and 26.3% of all households.
  4. Couples with dependent children represented 20.8% of households in private rentals and 24.4% of all Queensland. In the local area, this proportion is in excess of 60%.

Housing costs for renters are lower in Queensland than for Australia with the median weekly private rental housing costs being $149 (Queensland wide) compared with $155 for Australia. Local rents tend to average around $300 per week.
